Artist Statement From Fall Review

Piece: “Chimera”

“There are 12,500 known species of ant in existence. Ants function by building colonies that can occupy large territories and contain millions of individuals. In fact, ants have colonized almost every landmass on Earth. Ant societies have division of labour, communication between individuals, and an ability to solve complex problems. These parallels with human societies have long been an inspiration and subject of study.”
-Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant#cite_note-SANdisk-8)

With this understanding of the commonality between ants and humans, I have often wondered: What if this commonality extended to the physical body? A more human ant, or a more ant-like human? What would this being be like, combining the ant's physical strength with the human's ability to manipulate its surroundings? The ant's sense of community with the human's creative individualism? The result is the “Chimera”.

(I plan to elaborate on this statement for my project as a whole)
